Sacro-Occipital Technique

An Introduction to Structural and Functional Integrity

This information provides a brief explanation of the primary chiropractic technique used by Dr. Mary Rutherford in her practice.  This will give you some basic understanding about how the treatments facilitate your body’s innate healing potential.

Background
The founder of Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT), Dr. M.B. DeJarnette, DC, wrote more original material about structure and function than any other author in chiropractic.  His research techniques covered all aspects of human anatomy, physiology and neurology.  Specific pelvic, spinal, and cranial adjustments as well as soft tissue reflex techniques have been taught to Doctors of Chiropractic all over the world.  Since the early 1900’s, SOT has consistently delivered exceptional results while emphasizing patient comfort.

Your first treatment
Prior to your first visit, we will mail you forms to complete, including a health history, a dietary report form, and a complete “Health Appraisal Questionnaire”, which you will complete and bring to your first visit.

The first appointment is an hour long, at which we meet to discuss the problems which bring you in.  A complete chiropractic physical exam is performed.  This is done while the patient is completely dressed.  The evaluation includes hundreds of “indicators” specific to SOT, as well as other traditional tests and measures.  If necessary, blood work or x-rays may be ordered. Based on the findings of the examination, you will be placed in one of three “categories” for treatment.  A specific system of treatment is instituted taking into account the ongoing changes that occur while healing.  Your progress is monitored until changes in the indicators demonstrate the need for different treatment procedures.

Benefits of SOT
One major advantage of SOT is that strongly forceful adjustments are often not necessary in the treatment process.  SOT adjustments may be gently administered, some using the force of gravity and the patient’s body weight, while others use very light pressure.  SOT treatments are always very specific to your individual needs.

Treatment
Our primary focus is upon structural stability and integrity as well as neurological function. The basis of the human structure is the pelvis and the cranium.  The spine, shoulders, neck, and head sit upon the pelvis and are subject to the stresses and strains of gravity.  These structures, as well as the rest of the body, are functionally maintained and controlled by the brain through the nervous system. Brain function is dependent upon optimal motion and alignment of the cranial bones and cranial dura (the membrane around the brain and spinal cord.)  All structures of the body are essential to the integrity of the whole.

Additionally, organ function depends upon proper nerve supply from the spine.  The spine, in turn, receives nerve reflexes from the organs that can compromise spinal mechanics.  Therefore, the alignment, balance and optimal function of the cranium, pelvis, each spinal level, organs and all the limbs are essential to optimal health.
